The original soundtrack of the movie "Breaking Hell" was composed by Zhu Yunbian, which combines elements of Chinese and Western music, Nanyin, Taoist music and chanting. It is an extremely challenging work for Zhu Yunbian. The post-production mixing adopted Dolby Atmos technology, and the music floated down from the speakers on the ceiling, creating the atmosphere of a mourning hall. Director Chen Maoxian and editor Zhu Yun often discussed musical inspirations late at night, and often made experimental adjustments to the music to create different interpretations of the story. The film's soundtrack is dominated by string instruments, with woodwind instruments as the auxiliary tune. The two are interwoven to create rich human emotions. Gongs, drums and the sounds of chanting are also interwoven into the music.
The erhu symbolizes the emotional gap between father and daughter, representing the complex relationship between Wen Ge (played by Michael Hui) and his daughter (played by Michelle Wai). The latter part of the music expresses feelings of remembrance and longing through the erhu. The suona symbolizes Daosheng's (played by Dayo Wong) changing view of life and death, and is an important element throughout the entire score. In order to better understand the music of breaking hell, Zhu Yunbian immersed himself in the creation of nam music every day and experienced many emotional ups and downs.
