Richard personally planned the Christmas special [Christmas Once More], the name of which is a tribute to his masterpiece "Yesterday Once More", symbolizing the continuation and revisiting of emotions. The Carpenters have been closely associated with Christmas since the 1970s. After becoming famous with "(They Long To Be) Close To You" and "We've Only Just Begun", they released "Merry Christmas Darling" at the end of the same year. This song topped the Billboard Christmas Singles Chart three times and has become a timeless classic. Critics praised Karen's performance of this song, believing that she perfectly combined longing, hope and holiday sentiments, making it an emotional sustenance for couples during the winter vacation. In 1978, the Carpenters released their first Christmas special, Christmas Portrait, which sold millions of copies with its gorgeous arrangement and Karen's moving singing.

In 1984, after Karen's death, the unrecorded tracks recorded during the "Christmas Portrait" period were compiled into the second Christmas album "An Old-Fashioned Christmas". However, the 16 classics in "Christmas Once More" mainly come from "Christmas Portrait" and "An Old-Fashioned Christmas", but this time they were re-arranged, mixed and remastered. Richard selected ballads including "Merry Christmas Darling", "Sleigh Ride" and "(There's No Place Like) Home For The Holidays" and invited the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to accompany him, breathing new life into these familiar melodies. This work is not just a simple revisit of the past, but also an emotional re-creation. Richard hopes that through this version, fans can re-experience the Carpenters’ Christmas classic with modern sound quality, while maintaining the original warmth and delicate atmosphere of the song, continuing their deep holiday emotions.
